چکیده

The specific capacitance of the MWCNTs was improved by the addition of an electrochemically active compound (Indigo carmine) to an electrolyte generally used in electric double layer capacitors. The pseudocapacitive contribution of the IC trebled the specific capacitance values of the MWCNTs at low current densities (from 17 Fg to 50 Fg). The good resistance obtained for the MWCNT-based capacitor was not modified with the use of this novel redox-active electrolyte. A reversible process associated to the redox reaction of IC was found to be responsible for the capacitance increase observed. Therefore, a combined effect of double layer formation and pseudocapacitive phenomena is presented. Long-term cycling experiments performed showed good stability with a reduction of the initial capacitance values of 30 % after 10,000 galvanostatic cycles at 360 mAg. The efficiency of the cell was close to 100 % throughout the experiment.

Electrochemical characterization of carbon nanotubes as electrode in electrochemical double-layer capacitors

Carbon nanotubes uniformly 50 nm in diameter were directly grown on graphite foil. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) shows that the carbon nanotube /graphite foil electrode has a high specific capacitance (115.7 F/g at a scan rate of 100 mV/s) and exhibits typical double-layer behavior. A rectangular-shaped CV curve persists even at a scan rate of 100 mV/s in 1.0 M H SO aqueous solution, which suggests t...

Design of aqueous redox-enhanced electrochemical capacitors with high specific energies and slow self-discharge

Electrochemical double-layer capacitors exhibit high power and long cycle life but have low specific energy compared with batteries, limiting applications. Redox-enhanced capacitors increase specific energy by using redox-active electrolytes that are oxidized at the positive electrode and reduced at the negative electrode during charging. Here we report characteristics of several redox electrol...
